How we estimate roofing
Roof area is measured on the slope, not the plan, then converted to squares or square metres for each roof system. Ridges, hips, valleys, eaves and rakes are measured as lengths because they carry their own materials.
For low-slope roofs, insulation layers, tapered insulation, membrane and edge metal are listed separately, along with drains and curb penetrations.
What we measure
- Asphalt shingle, metal panel and tile systems
- Low-slope membranes: TPO, PVC, EPDM, modified bitumen
- Underlayment, ice and water barrier
- Roof insulation, including tapered systems
- Flashing, edge metal, ridge, hip and valley details
- Roof penetrations, curbs and drains
What to send us
- Roof plan with slopes and drainage
- Building elevations and roof details
- Specifications for roofing system and warranty requirements
- Aerial measurements or photos for re-roofing
What you receive
- Roof area by system, measured on slope
- Linear quantities for ridges, valleys, eaves and edges
- Accessory and flashing counts
- Material and labor cost breakdown
- Assumptions and exclusions
The exact contents and format are agreed when we quote the estimate.
Units of measure
- United States and Canada
- Squares (100 SF), LF of edge and flashing
- United Kingdom (and metric projects)
- m², m of edge and flashing
