How we estimate earthwork & site preparation
Earthwork quantities come from the difference between existing and proposed grades. We calculate cut and fill volumes from the grading plan, add foundation excavation and backfill, and note where import or export of material is expected.
Swell and compaction factors are listed explicitly, because they change truck counts and the volume you pay for. Where a geotechnical report is provided, its recommendations on over-excavation and engineered fill are carried into the estimate.
What we measure
- Clearing, grubbing and topsoil stripping
- Mass excavation and cut/fill balance
- Foundation and footing excavation
- Structural backfill and compaction
- Utility trenching and bedding
- Erosion and sediment control measures
What to send us
- Existing topographic survey
- Grading and drainage plans
- Geotechnical report
- Site utility plans
What you receive
- Cut and fill volumes with net import/export
- Excavation and backfill quantities by area
- Equipment and hauling cost breakdown
- Swell and shrink factors used
- Assumptions and exclusions
The exact contents and format are agreed when we quote the estimate.
Units of measure
- United States and Canada
- Cubic yards (CY), SF of stripping
- United Kingdom (and metric projects)
- Cubic metres (m³), m² of stripping
